5000 V8-Frontmotor mit Transaxle-Getriebe, 330 PS, 0-100 km/h 5.2 s, Vmax 290 km/h. Mindestens.
Unbelievable, but we are talking about an oldtimer in this 928 GT! The vehicle was ennobled in October 2019 by a current general inspection in conjunction with H-acceptance and since then it is allowed to carry Historic plates and to participate in any classic car event.
Formally we are missing 20 years. At least!
With a wink of the eye, Porsche AG could well present this model of the 928 today as a successful retro remake of the Über-Porsche presented over 40 years ago, without surprising the viewer. At most perhaps with the perception of how well the new edition has succeeded…And yet it cannot be said often enough and thus strain you as a reader – we are talking about a genuine old-timer that amazes, almost inspires, with its 5.0 V8 engine, its 330 hp, its revolutionary Weissach rear axle and its 300 km/h top speed that can still be reached casually even today!
What a magnificent engineering achievement was achieved at that time, after the idea of a 911 successor was born at Porsche almost 50 years ago. That this extremely cost-intensive construction would make it to the year 1995 and thus made it through all model maintenance to a production of almost 20 years is all the more astonishing when you consider that already at the beginning of the 90s a rough head wind blew at Porsche. The company was getting worse and worse, shaken by the market and the antiquated production methods of up to 70 hours per car.
We start at this point and describe this splendorous guy as detailed as possible, because – where exactly is a 928 GT for sale, which carries a complete checkbook, board folder, all keys etc. from MAHAG Munich? In its complete history there is also an invoice from 2006, from which a complete engine revision amounting to approx. € 15.000.– can be found. This work was carried out at km status 130000. If you leaf through the folder further, you will come across an extensive invoice from the factory’s own Porsche classics department in Freiberg. Apart from timing belts, tension pulleys, water pump etc. many other jobs were done during this “cure” stay at the factory with the aim to make this special 928 weatherproof for decades to come. All maintenance and repairs in the time before were exclusively carried out at the delivering company MAHAG in Munich.
Based on our accumulated experience of the last decades and several Porsche 928 in all variants we would like to point out that you will have to deal with a complex and fascinating car, which needs much more sophisticated care and maintenance than for example the small air-cooled brother 911. When searching for a suitable car, please pay attention to the actual state of the car and if there is a certain maintenance backlog to be cleared. In most cases, this effort is underestimated, especially financially!
Often, even blue-eyed sellers of these models trivialize or at least trivialize this work, perhaps even only because they don’t know any better…but please don’t be fooled! The 928 is basically a very fascinating, if functioning automobile, but if the worm is in it, it can just as quickly turn into a dime grave, which unfortunately doesn’t take any change…besides spare parts that are becoming more and more expensive, it is above all the few, but highly paid specialists who open their clients’ eyes wide again and again, when the true extent of all necessary work has been calculated and the usually large sum is fixed.
This work, which has now been carried out over the course of 30 years, is of course also necessary for a high-performance sports car in this category, if one is honest enough to ask oneself this question. That’s why our well-intentioned advice in the year 2020 is to stop believing in the fairytale that there are still cheap Porsches somewhere in the world.
In the meantime, word has probably got around even in the remotest corners that vehicles from this House in particular cost very good money if they are well and proper maintained with clear service history.
The positive market development in recent years has not only a dark side for those who are looking for something, dear reader. This situation is not only a curse but also a blessing. Many owners – as with this 928 GT offered by us – have recognized the signs and invested a lot of money and effort in their Porsche, because the vehicle in question remains valuable and should continue to develop positively in this respect. So it is better to concentrate on vehicles where you are on the safest possible side from the moment you buy them, where the follow-up costs remain calculable, and where you as the buyer can enjoy unlimited driving pleasure without regret practically from the moment you take delivery.
These cars are usually only at first glance “more expensive” than other models that are comparable in terms of data. On closer inspection, however, the wheat is usually separated from the chaff and explains the additional financial outlay involved in the purchase. It is in the nature of things that hardly anyone puts tens of thousands of Euros into their Porsche to maintain it or get it in shape, and then gives it away for a supposed knock-down price. Experience has shown that this is something that no Porsche owner would do today…
So let us advise you and show you why there might be a price difference. Let us show you why exactly this Porsche is worth its money. If you have all these confirmations at the end and also a good, “fitting” feeling that it could be “your” car, you better expand your budget and decide for the better car right away. You will not regret it if you are in good hands.
So see you soon.
